Tour Overview
Northern England offers one of Britain’s most rewarding journeys, combining dramatic scenery with centuries of history that have shaped the nation. From the castles and beaches of the Northumberland coast to the Roman frontier of Hadrian’s Wall, the medieval streets of York and the spectacular landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Park, every day reveals another chapter of Britain’s story
This is a journey through landscapes where kingdoms were forged, frontiers defended and cultures met. The Romans established their northern frontier here, Vikings arrived along the North Sea coast, medieval cathedrals still dominate ancient cities, and the hills and valleys continue to inspire visitors seeking a quieter, more authentic side of England.
Travelling with your own private Driver & Guide allows the experience to unfold at a relaxed pace. Every itinerary can be adapted around your interests, whether you enjoy history, photography, gardens, walking or simply discovering beautiful places away from the crowds.

Suggested 7-Day Tour Itinerary
Every MyUKtour itinerary is tailored to you. This suggested journey illustrates how your Northern England tour could unfold and can be adapted to suit your interests, preferred pace and travel dates.
Day 1 – Northumberland Coast, Castles & England's Frontier
Cross into England through one of Britain’s most contested border regions, where England and Scotland have shaped one another for centuries. Arriving on the Northumberland coast, enjoy sweeping views across wide sandy beaches and the North Sea, whose shores brought traders, pilgrims and Viking raiders to these lands.
Subject to the tides, visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne or take a boat trip to the Farne Islands, a favourite destination for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Continue to the magnificent Bamburgh Castle, dramatically positioned above the coastline. Explore the castle or enjoy a walk along the expansive beach before continuing to the historic market town of Alnwick for your overnight stay.
Day 2 – Hadrian's Wall, Roman Britain & Durham
Travel inland to Hadrian’s Wall, the northern frontier of the Roman Empire and one of Britain’s most significant historical landscapes. Visit Chesters Roman Fort to discover how Roman cavalry once guarded this frontier almost two thousand years ago.
Continue to Washington Old Hall, the ancestral home of the family of George Washington, before arriving in the beautiful city of Durham. Explore its magnificent cathedral and medieval streets before your overnight stay.
Day 3 – Into Yorkshire
Journey south into the historic city of York, where Roman foundations, Viking heritage and medieval streets combine to create one of England’s most fascinating destinations.
After checking into your hotel, enjoy a relaxed introduction to the city. Wander through the atmospheric streets, browse independent shops and cafés, or simply soak up the character of this remarkable place before your overnight stay.
Day 4 – York Minster & Your Day, Your Way
Begin the morning with a visit to the magnificent York Minster, one of Europe’s greatest Gothic cathedrals, before walking the ancient city walls for wonderful views across the historic city.
The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace. As this is your private tour, the afternoon can be tailored to your interests. Spend more time discovering York’s Roman, Viking and medieval heritage, visit one of its excellent museums, or enjoy a scenic excursion into the surrounding Yorkshire countryside.
Day 5 – Fountains Abbey, the Yorkshire Dales & Into the Lake District
Leaving York behind, travel west to the magnificent Fountains Abbey, one of England’s finest monastic ruins and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the abbey and the adjoining Studley Royal Water Garden before continuing into the spectacular Yorkshire Dales.
Travel through the beautiful market town of Settle before pausing to admire the dramatic limestone landscape of Malham Cove. Continue across the Dales and into the Lake District for your overnight stay in Windermere.
Day 6 – The Lake District
Spend the day exploring England’s most celebrated national park. Scenic drives reveal tranquil lakes, traditional villages and breathtaking mountain scenery, with opportunities to stop wherever the landscape invites.
Visit the prehistoric Castlerigg Stone Circle, beautifully set among the surrounding fells, and, for those with an interest in English literature, there is the opportunity to visit Dove Cottage, the former home of William Wordsworth.
As always, the route is flexible and can be adapted to your interests, allowing time to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace.
Day 7 – Continue Your Journey
Your Northern England tour concludes today, but your journey need not end here.
Whether you wish to continue south towards London, travel north into Scotland, return to York or Manchester, or extend your stay in the Lake District, we will tailor the final day’s travel to fit seamlessly into your wider vacation plans.
