Outline Itinerary
Day 1
The tour starts with a full day of Lake District sightseeing, getting up into the high fells with views of Scafell Pike, Wast Water, and a visit to the lonely Roman Fort at Hardknott. Visit the 10th-century ‘Viking’ Cross at St.Mary’s Church, Gosforth, where you can also see two Viking hogback tomb markers of the same era. Muncaster Castle and its beautiful gardens provide a tranquil spot during the day and are at their best in early summer (May-June).
Take the opportunity to ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway. This vintage, narrow gauge (15”) railway, known locally as La’al Ratty (little railway in Cumbrian dialect) runs 7 miles, from the coast to Dalegarth, offering spectacular views over the coastal landscape and fells.
Day 2:
After a good rest and hearty breakfast, the day will take on a more active note with the opportunity for short hikes and walks, visiting the picturesque lakes in the Lake District; Buttermere and Crummock Water, Derwent Water, Castlerigg Stone Circle, Thirlmere and Grasmere. While in and around Grasmere, explore the world of William Wordsworth. Visit his family home at Rydal Mount, Dove Cottage where he lived with his sister, and his final resting place at St.Oswald’s Church.
Day 3:
Will introduce you to the story of Beatrix Potter, who created her best-loved literary works at Hill Top House. Your day will start with a ferry ride across Lake Windermere to New Sawery. Here your guide will conduct a private tour of Hill Top House and detail the life and works of Beatrix Potter. In nearby Hawkeshead see the Grammar School attended by William Wordsworth. Stop at Tarn Hows for a stroll and picturesque scenes of the lake. Your Lake District tour begins here.
