Enchanted Galaxy
The Balmoral Hotel
Location: Edinburgh
We’ll begin our magical journey in Edinburgh, an enchanting destination brimming with magic at every turn. First, we’ll visit The Elephant House, the cosy cafe where J.K Rowling penned much of the first book and offers spellbinding views of Edinburgh Castle, which may well have been the inspiration for Hogwarts.
Just a short stroll away is Greyfriars Kirkyard, which contains the graves of Thomas Riddle, Robert Potter and William McGonagall!
We’ll end day one with a drink at The Balmoral Hotel, where Rowling finished the final chapters of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. If you’re lucky, you might even get the chance to visit the JK Rowling suite, complete with an owl door knocker and signed marble bust.
On day two, we’ll head to Victoria Street and Westbow, the winding, vibrant street that many believe inspired Diagon Alley.
We’ll also visit Enchanted Galaxy, where shelves brim with magical relics from wands to Hogwarts house paraphernalia.
Location Highlights
Rannoch Moor
Location: Scottish Highlands
On day three, we’ll head north, travelling through breathtaking scenery complete with misty mountains, ancient forests and shimmering lochs and stopping for lunch at the Victorian village of Kinloch Rannoch.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit Rannoch Moor. This location, with its hauntingly beautiful and untamed landscape, has strong associations with the wizarding world. This vast, desolate stretch of wilderness in the Scottish Highlands was used as a filming location for scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where the trio is seen camping while on the run from Voldemort. The moor’s remote beauty and mysterious energy make it a fitting backdrop for some of the darker moments in the series.
Location Highlights
Steall Waterfall
Location: Glen Nevis
We’ll begin day four with a visit to Steall Waterfall, which is one of Scotland’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Steall Waterfall holds special significance for Harry Potter fans. This towering waterfall, cascading down 120 meters, was featured in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as the dramatic backdrop for the Triwizard Tournament’s first challenge. During the film, Harry faces the fierce Hungarian Horntail in a heart-pounding chase through the skies, with Steall Falls adding an epic sense of scale to the scene.
The area’s wild beauty makes it the perfect setting for such an intense, high-stakes moment in the series. In the afternoon, we’ll head over to Fort William.
Location Highlights
Loch Shiel
Location: Northwest Highlands
On day five, we’ll head northwest to Loch Shiel. The serene waters of Loch Shiel were featured in multiple Harry Potter movies, most notably as the setting for Hogwart’s famous Black Lake.
Beyond its magical connections, Loch Shiel is a place renowned for its rich history and natural splendour, with its clear waters stretching for a jaw-dropping 17 miles, framed by the rugged beauty of Glenfinnan and the surrounding hills.
Location Highlights
Glennfinnan Viaduct
Location: Northwest Highlands
Day six will take us east, to the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct. With sweeping arches and a stunning Highland backdrop, this majestic railway bridge is instantly recognisable to Harry Potter fans as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express on its journey to Hogwarts. The viaduct is first seen in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron, in their enchanted flying car, race the train across the Scottish landscape.
Visitors can soak in the atmosphere and witness the train’s approach, billowing smoke and steam as it traverses the picturesque Scottish landscape. After capturing the perfect shot, you’ll even be able to take a ride on The Jacobite, which is a traditional steam train.
Location Highlights
Black Rock Gorge
Location: Dingwall
On the final day of the tour, we’ll travel further north to Black Rock Gorge, which is something of a hidden gem nestled deep within the Scottish Highlands. This deep, narrow cavern, carved by the River Glass, is surrounded by towering cliffs and dense woodland, creating an atmosphere of eerie beauty. It was used in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire during the scene where Harry faces the first task of the Triwizard Tournament.
Beyond its ties to the series, Black Rock Gorge is a striking natural wonder, with the river plunging through a 120-foot-deep cavern. We’ll end the trip with a visit and stay in the nearby city of Inverness.
